A main road running right past the town centre. These flats are in one of the more neglected parts of the town, known as the Murray. Each block has different coloured squares running across the front, the design is typical sixties modernism.

One of the main Catholic churches in the town, called St Brides. The church stands on a hill on its own above the town centre. It's a very imposing building, towering above church goers.

One entrance to the main shopping centre, a ramp which also has steps running up the middle.

This hotel has been in East Kilbride town centre for over twenty

years, it's part of EK's massive indoor shopping centre.

Right next to the Stuart Hotel, a row of shops and offices,
including Domino's pizza.

Car park for the shopping centre, each level is colour coded.

This is in the oldest part of the town, 'The Village'. The landscaping is a lot more natural than other parts of the town, it's also a slightly wealthier area.

A lot of the underpasses have been decorated by local groups or clubs.
This brightens them up and helps disguise the graffiti.

This picture is a blatent display of the diverse cultures currently in Whalley, new versus old buildings and raggedy versus clean cut structures. This shot was taken on a one way street, infamous for its rough territory, which made this building contrast dramatically.

Whalley has all types of places to eat. This sign for Rickshaw Chinese Food is very visable when you drive down King George.

This is another photo of St. Helens Church. St. Helens was built in 1911, which makes St. Helens a historical landmark.

Whalley has lot of empty lots, just waiting to be developed. The lots are very wild with lots of weeds, pretty flowers growing and overgrown trees.

Whalley has all types of churches. This church, St.Helens is well taking care of and has a playground for kids to play and a hall which can be rented out.

Hi to the Surrey students!

I'm Louise Murphy and I'll be looking after the site and adding my own images of East Kilbride. I'm a fine art graduate (nearly!) and I have recently returned to the town after living away for a time, which gives me a different perspective.

I'm looking forward to seeing and reading your responses to East Kilbride.

The various parts of East Kilbride are connected by major roads, so there are a lot of underpasses and bridges to allow you to cross them safely. This is a long exposure photo, taken at night. Like most of the town, the underpasses are typical of modernist sixties architecture. There's a lot of concrete, which at the time was a new and exciting building material, rather than grey and dull the way it is now.

This is the underpass by day- a little less scary!
You can just see the pebble dash on the side of the bridge, that helps protect it from the cold weather and the harsh winds. The path running underneath is for pedestrians, the road part is for cyclists, which seems normal now but was quite ahead of it's time for the 1960s. You can see into the distance, almost to the heart of the town, this was intended to give people a central point to look towards. The green mounds and grass help balance the concrete.
